Also, most anime series also have a set end-date and a complete story from the beginning (and those that don't tend to have a LOT of bad filler episodes.) Same thing with British series – the original Life On Mars is just about perfect ...

The quick answer — which I will largely ignore for the rest of this post — is no, because in this day and age of Internet spoilers, a main character's departure from a show would most likely be widely known by airing. Some keep their secrets better than others ... Also this was done very well in Life On Mars, Brit version, which allowed the series to actually conclude utter satisfaction. Last example I can think of off the top of my head is this past season of Primeval. ...

American life on mars and the American Spaced failed. this film doesn't fail, but it just doesn't have that English charm when it comes to mixin horror and comedy. watch it for the fantastic cameo. the clowns and a few scrubs esk jokes. ...
